Black Friday Reconsidered
It seems that in this day and age, more and more people are watching the Super Bowl not for the game, but for the notoriety of the overpriced but fun commercials. The main event is turning into the side show, the necessary evil, the hoop to jump through in order to get the prize. Black Friday seems to be taking this odd turn in that more and more people are not looking for the awesome deals combined with congested crowds and die-hards sleeping out in November weather to ensure that shot at the prize. No, it appears more and more people are looking to hear the news and what was the latest human tragedy spawned from pathetic materialism and shameless greed. 2008 gave the people what they want, almost as if it was paraded before the masses upon the field of a coliseum, with all the frivolity of stoning to death innocent girls before an audience in Somalia.
Black Friday is not new to tragedy, there on Mammon's holiday, where it appears perfectly acceptable to throw humanity under a bus for the sake of a blue light or a red tag. Yea, for this is the day when police must take action to prosecute people for trampling others, much like what happened to a Wal-Mart employee at a store in New York this year (people were described as acting like savages, but this is Mammon's Day, so...) or back in 2006, when people were trampled in a Best Buy parking lot in Fresno, California. Then, there was another in 2006 out in California, this incident near Torrance, where a woman was trampled and seriously injured at a shopping mall. Trampling on Black Friday (the politically correct term for Mammon's Day) does appear very much a traditional act, much like waving flags on Flag Day or caroling around Christmas time, but it isn't the only activity enjoyed by those who celebrate this grand occasion. There are the feats of the holiday, such as stabbings, shootings, and blatant robbery, such as committed by gunmen at a store in Ohio for a PS3 player. In fact, PS3 players and other electronics tend to be the prize sought by the savages during most Black Friday celebrations. It isn't all purely entertainment electronics, however. In 2005 at a Wal-Mart (get the hint: If you do not celebrate Mammon's Day, perhaps the day after Thanksgiving should be spent somewhere other than Wal-Mart, or anywhere electronics are sold) in Lincoln, Nebraska, shoppers literally pummeled to the ground and seized from the clutches of cringing fellow shoppers computers they got to first. Ah, but the authorities do learn, as demonstrated the next year at a Circuit City store in Virginia, where officers were forced to pepper spray savages seeking electronics. To be honest, if the festivities of this bizarre holiday are what they are, it would be a treat to purchase advance tickets to see police taze savages and then douse them with pepper spray, particularly in the southern states where the weather is milder and one could tailgate while waiting for the festivities to start. Facetiousness aside, isn't it time this sort of thing be addressed by the retailers? It isn't the purpose of this article to suggest retailers accept the responsibility of savages who act like savages on this day; the desire would be that retailers consider this lower aspect of the human condition and create a Black Friday situation that caters to civilized behavior and does not feed the beast of inhumane greed and selfishness. To be honest, when a situation reduces ordinary citizens into crazed lunatics who would kick a pregnant woman to the ground to rend a product from her arms, it should be reviewed. After all, there is an old clich stating the early bird gets the worm, but on Black Friday it appears the philosophy is you hunt down all early birds and stomp them in order to take their worm and ensure they never get one.
