The Unity Of The Virtues Thesis- Revised
The quality or state of not being multiple- Oneness: This is what Merriam-Webster says unity is. According to Wolf in her opening line of Moral Psychology and the Unity of Virtues, "The thesis of the Unity of Virtues is a well-known tenet of ancient Greek ethics." This 'thesis' or, in my opinion, theory, played a major part in shaping life of the ancient Greeks and still today, plays a huge role in our beliefs as human beings, even if we don't see it. Behind all of this, however, lies still yet, the theory'"not fact, not proven. Just theory. We seem to hold in the idea that most people are a mixture of this so called "good" and "bad" and thus, the Unity of Virtues, or the state in which all standards in which we hold to be "good" and "virtuous" come together and act as one and in oneness could not possibly be true. In the next few pages, I am going to attempt to justify this thought and agree with that of Susan wolf in the idea expressed in page 14 of her text saying "[virtue] requires consciousness and sophisticated mental faculties of a kind that only human beings seem to possess."
The Thesis, or theory, itself has multiple perplexing parts to it within its own self. The definition of 'unity' can be debated in this context as well as what the grounds and basis for virtue is. What virtues are "virtuous enough" and which ones didn't make the cut and why are just a couple of the other questions. The list goes on and on as the followers of this theory dwindle. Since there seems to be no understandable relationship between some of the virtues ("generosity and honesty -- patience and justice -- courage and kindness, " as Wolf stated it so eloquently on page 2), it is next to impossible to pinpoint exactly what the Greeks were thinking about and referring to when they designed this idea. Another fact to identify is that of extremes. There stands the ideas of vices of excess and lacking'"the idea that we would not really understand the difference between frugality and stinginess or courage and rashness if we didn't really ever use the first ones to call the quality to face proper, and ONLY suitable, conditions well. What this means is, we sometimes group everything together to call it by a name, which is what skews our ideas of virtues. For instance, we might think of someone who pushes a child out of the way of a bus as valiant and exhibiting the virtues of courage and bravery and honor, but if they were unaware of the dangers of the bus then their noble act lost its trait as a virtue because of the lack of knowledge. In another example, one might think of a soldier as brave and courageous, but if the vice of excess kicks in within this soldier's courage, then they are acting out of context when leaping from in front of death's doors out of 'the thrill'. This discussion will be continued in a later section when the idea of knowledge is addressed. By Ragan Oliver -Sky Diving - Outer Banks North Carolina (YTO 245 of 365)
