Sturgis & South Dakota Motorcycle Laws

Please be careful when riding we don't want you involved in expensive or live threatening accidents. Unfortunately there is always a number of fatalities each year. Don't be one of them. Another spoiler is the law. They are there to protect the masses at a very huge event and they will not let individuals put others safty in jeopardy. Many motorcyclist will be out of staters and are not familer with Sturgis City laws or state laws.

Ghost Riders Leather wants you to enjoy your visit and we don't want you having a run in with the man. Everything there is expensive enough so the last thing you want to do is turn your vacation dollars over to the police. A run in with them can be quite expensive.

In the chart below is a list of the most common laws that are violated in the City of Sturgis during Bike Week and the number of dollars you will pay if you brake them and get caught.

Also the state of South Dakota has a list of required motorcycle equipment.

• Every motorcycle must be equipped with at least one but no more than two headlamps.
• The handlebars of a motorcycle must be no higher than the shoulder height of the person operating the motorcycle.
• All persons under the age of 18 must wear motorcycle safty helmets that are approved by the South Dakota Department Of Transportation.
• A person riding in an enclosed cab attached to a motorcycle does not have to wear a safty helmet.
• A motorcycle operator must wear an eye protection device unless the motorcycle is equipped with a windscreen of sufficient height and design that protects the motorcycle operator. When headlights are required to be on, a motorcycle operator cannot wear protectivbe eye devices that are tented or shaded to reduce the light transmission of the device below 35 percent.
• Motorcycles must have at least one tail lamp, which when lighted emits a red light visible for a distance of 500 feet.
• Every motorcycle must at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise.
