Parachutes: Should You Be Afraid?

Some consider skydiving to be among the most extreme sports in the world, yet more people than ever before are taking to the skies. As time goes by more and more people give up their plain Jane lives and become the daredevils they always wanted to be.

Of course, because of the inherent danger found in skydiving, many people who might otherwise love to do it can't find the courage to give it a try. One of the greatest fears these folks have is about the safety, or feared lack thereof, of the parachute. In order to hopefully ease the anxiety of these potential Skydivers, below is a review of why parachutes are in fact
remarkably safe.

The reality about modern parachutes is that they are engineered to open fully when released from their rig. The parachute is designed to slow the fall of the diver and to allow the diver to easily control their descent. The chute also enables a skilled diver to land so softly that reaching the ground is no more jarring than stepping off the last step of a flight of stairs. In fact, before the diver ever leaves the ground for the first time he undergoes extensive ground training which, among other important subjects, also teaches him what to do in the very unlikely event something goes wrong.

Malfunctions of the main chute are extremely rare, but when they do occur, in most cases they can easily be fixed while the diver is still well above the ground. But, in the rare circumstance when something does go wrong, divers can easily fall back on their secondary chute which they are required to carry by law.

While each diver is learning the ins and outs of skydiving safely, they also learn the care and safety measures that go along with packing their own main chute. But when it comes to the packing of the reserve chute, the law requires that chute be packed exclusively by a rigger who has received extensive training in that area and is certified by the Federal Aviation Administration or (F.A.A.).

The reality is that skydiving is a very enjoyable sport to participate in. Unfortunately, there are many people who would really like to try it, but are frightened to do so because of exaggerated fears about the dangers involved. In many cases, the media has fed this paranoia by showing failed dives not only in movies, but also in tabloid television shows. What they fail to explain in these shows is the reality that these types of failures are very rare, and that divers are taught many ways to avoid or recover from a failed primary chute.

Those who would really like to try skydiving, but are scared to do so because of their fear of dying from of a failed chute need to remember that there is so much more to life than what they are afraid of. If they can get past their initial fear, they will find skydiving a sport that they just can't get enough of.

Listing people as family on FB?
I got a family member request today and am not sure what to do about it. A very close friend of mine requested to add me as his daughter which I would be fine with except his step-daughter died 4 years ago and I'm worried about how her mother (his wife) will react when he lists me as his daughter. Over the last 3 years I have referred to them as my skydiving parents and they have called me their adopted daughter. Their daughter was a skydiver (died in a plane crash, not jumping), he got me into skydiving and we've all been really close ever since. Am I over thinking this whole situation?? My husband thinks its weird which made me over think everything haha
