Army Poem #03: Standing At Attention In Missouri
Green black and brown Army patterns
Pass by me while the whistle blows and
The dusts muddies with the sweat on my skin.
Staring straight ahead, my sight is a line
To a pebble in a red brick of a barracks,
I dare not move. This morsel of a block
In a wall is all I can see for now.
And the pebble explains eons to me,
Telling tales of high winters and hot suns,
Unbearable times never seen. I see the past
Sawed in half.
The sergeant's whistle blows in my ears, but not for me.
A story lives in the cracks of the rock,
The largest splint in the pebble explains
A tall tale how the scar appeared,
One of blizzard, misfortune, and one hundred years:
Says the water came in a torrential splay
As the cows brayed and prayed for shelter,
Asking the farmer to comply any way or how,
So he did grumbling as he trudged against the wind
To the pasture where the rain switched to sleet
Of its own accord, the temperature plummeted,
All at once the water froze in the rock
And the last cow went in
As the farmer's back went out
As he slipped on the rock, all for the damned holstein;
He limped to the house, the rock wedged, defeated, both.
Get down, GET DOWN!! GET DOWN! I SAID DOWN! UP! DOWN! MOVE!!!'
Louder they yell,
With acid tongues.
I venture straight ahead diving deeper to my pebble
Where a red mineral line snakes through
Making a median of mystery, as if leeched
Through granite by an artist's impression,
A red line instilled like a coarse Dragon Draco
Riveted earthward by a red summer moon mirror.
From where did you come, little streak?
Unbelonging at one time
Though now a centerpiece. What day's
Cataclysm made you a member?
So I'm told,
Between the shrill bounce of a whistle ball
Whisking in a confined space, 'get up! get down!'
I'm told that the moment rode on
The glee of kinetics, the power of elasticity
When the straw breaks the tectonic back.
The endless derision of erosion went one too far
Before force forced an equation's correction.
As the sun baked, the top layer lasted
For a century or ten, an empire once but
Now a mere cross section of a builder's brick.
The crimson molten rain came radiantly,
One inch in one hour while the ground shook.
But the sergeant interrupted the story&
My turn had arrived.
I rolled in green black brown swirls, then stood
Filthy dripping, and still, at attention, staring straight ahead
At the pebble again, and the linear ages.
Then the stories, dirty stories this time, of muddying
The topmost solid, foisting
A dark strip into the seam via the wind,
The howling banter of an epoch,
An era blankly forgotten until today
While green black and brown patterns pass before me,
Another group this time,
Poor bastards,
This is getting brutal.
So change found the pebble again when a new
Pass of limestone made a distribution
With fine textures akin to that of
A thousand squashed spiders with their legs
Flitting a thousand directions.
Forged from another grave incident,
Overthrowing the reigning red layer.
Silent revolutions happen every day,
History from the bottom up, top down,
In layers, as natural as the sweat bead rolls
Off my shaved head down my nose
And falls to my dusty boots where the hot sun
Gathers the drop to the sky once again in an
Infinite loop. Stinging. How I need to wipe the sweat
Out of my eyes, and shift my feet off the hot rock
But I cannot, had better not, no, I won't look
Away from the pebble in the red brick, enamored by
The tales to occupy my mind - Tell me the ending little one!
Yes, tell!
It goes he's seen mountains and valleys,
