I Want To Skydive, But I Am Afraid To "Jump From A Perfectly Good Airplane"
Most of us have thought about, if only for a second, what it would be like to jump from a plane and then cheat death with a parachute. For most of us, this is the end of the experience, and we content ourselves with the security of our feet firmly on the ground. "I am afraid of heights" and "I would have to be pushed out of the plane" are the most common showstopping factors to actually jumping from that perfectly good airplane.
skydiving without a doubt is considered the ultimate in human fear, encompassing, the fear of heights, the fear of flight, falling and then ultimately cheating death by what seems like the smallest of margins. Less than 1% of us will actually ignore those sirens in our brain and submit ourselves to the what seems like the most terrifying human experience imaginable. Lets forget about that 1% and talk about the rest of us.
Although all statistics show skydiving is safer that say, driving to work or owning a toaster, we still do not flock to our local airport and suit up for a quick jump before work or toast in the morning. We see skydivers in movies television and probably at your local airport everyday, but yet still no real thought of doing it yourself. The reason is simple and the brain sirens are relatively easy to silence, or at least dim for a moment. The fact is that we are the 1st. generation in human history to have the ability to actually achieve that human experience/dream/nightmare depending on your current state of mind. We have never, in all of humanity, had the ability to fly in an airplane until this century. We have never had the tools or the technology to jump from high places. (more than once). But now we have it all, but yet it is still the 1%Er's enjoying this ultimate in personal life experience. The sirens are the primordial screams of our brain-stem warning us of disaster similar to facing a wild lion or a jealous spouse, instinctively you know this is not going to turn out well.
