Have World Events Made You Leery Of Traveling?

With the recent riots and trouble reported out of Egypt and war causalities in Middle Eastern countries, most Americans, Canadians, Europeans and others may have become leery of traveling. Even cruises to "normal" destinations have encountered problems, so is it really safe to travel?

Enjoying the benefits of travel should not cease simply because there are troubled spots in the world or freak accidents that occur. Following are some tips to help you have a safe journey in the world of travel.

Choose safe destinations. You might hear the teenager say "duh" about now, but for some travelers "safe" is not part of their travel vocabulary. In fact, the more risk and adventure, the more some people seek it out. However, going to places that are "allowed" for Americans and others, but are truly not the safest places in the world can mean delays, potential trouble and even life threatening situations. It's true that one can't predict where the next suicide bomber might hit, but it's more likely to be in the streets of the Middle East than on the Florida gulf coast; so seriously consider changing your destination to a safer country.

Know the location of the nearest US Embassy. If you are traveling to a potentially dangerous area of the world, be sure to know where the US Embassy is located. Keep your passport close at hand and your eyes open.

Respect cultural differences. If you're traveling to a location that is potentially violent due to religious differences and political unrest, be sure to respect the laws of the land or the religious, social and political cultures of the country. For women, especially, be careful to dress modestly and adhere to the strict rules of the land.

Stay in safe hotels and locations. When traveling to potentially volatile locations, be sure to stay in hotels, motels and safe locations for foreigners. Keep track of all your belongings and make several copies of your I.D. and other valuable documents.

Blend in and don't look like a tourist. Another way to travel safely is to blend in and not stand out as a tourist. Fumbling with a map, dressing in bright colorful hats and colors can make you a target to potentially dangerous people.

Be observant at all times. Being aware of your surroundings is important. So is not walking alone. Try to always travel with a friend or partner. Keep an eye and ear open to the news and have someone tell you the safest and not so safe places to go. Avoid the latter!

Being safe as a traveler should be a top priority. Save your need for risk for snowboarding or parachuting!
