Oprah's Step Out Of Your Box Challenge: My Box
I just got done watching Oprah's Step Out of Your Box Challenge, on which four 'regular' women were presented three challenges to get them to step out of their box: skating roller-derby style; skinny dipping; and tandem skydiving.
I tried to imagine myself stepping out of my box with these three activities. The roller derby challenge would not have been an issue for me at all. I'm not sure if it would even qualify as a step out of my box. Although I probably wouldn't have been good at it, I wouldn't have held back trying it. I even think that getting to push people aside and knock them down might have been fun for me-you know, release a little tension, and all that. It's been a long time since I went skinny dipping, but I'd do that, fairly easily, especially with four other women around me doing it as well. It would have been a step out of my box, but only a little one. I'd have been a little nervous, but never would have considered not doing it. Tandem skydiving would have scared me-a lot, I admit, but I would have done it. Probably the only way I'd do it would be tandem. I'm pretty sure I'd need someone else to get me out of the plane; not sure I'd be able to jump out on my own. This would be a big step out of my box. Of course, watching the show, and Oprah's challenges, got me thinking about my box, and times I've stepped out of it. There have been a few. Moving to Texas five years ago was a big step out of my box. I didn't know a soul and I didn't have a job lined up; what I did have was the proceeds from selling my house in Florida and Dallas Cowboys season tickets. It was a good move. A few years ago I attended a Millionaire Mind Intensive weekend; during breaks and before sessions started, music played and people danced on stage. The friends I was attending the seminar with had asked me to get on the stage several times, and I vehemently refused. Until the last day. Then I decided I ought to step out of my box and do it; so to the shock of myself and my friends, I got up on that stage and danced. Glad I did it. I got a tattoo about two years ago. I'd wanted one for years, but was always afraid. Then someone I worked with offered to go with me and hold my hand if I needed it (I didn't), so I'm now marked for life. A fairly big step out of my box. A dream come true, and extremely glad I did it. All this thinking about taking that step out of my box makes me realize, however, that it's probably time for me to do it again. What things would challenge me? Bungee jumping. This would be a huge, huge, challenge for me. Bungee jumping would be so far out of my box, you couldn't even call it a box anymore. If I could do it like Angelina Jolie did it in Lara Croft, with all the security and safety measures you know had to be in place before she'd be allowed to jump, it would probably be much easier. But doing it at a carnival or someplace like that? I think this is one box that will stay closed for me. Singing in public. Another big challenge-a really big step out of my box. But, if the room were packed with friends (and I had several drinks, or would that be cheating?), I would probably be able to squeak out a short song. Only slightly less terrifying than this would be speaking in public. Again, the friendly faces would make it doable. Going on a book signing tour when my novel is published. Scary, nerve-wracking, but I'll definitely do it. Got to get the book finished first, then find a publisher, but I'm thinking ahead and putting a positive spin on it. Realistically, at least in the short term, I'm going to have to find a way to step out of my box in a small way, then maybe work myself up to bungee jumping or singing in public, unless of course, Oprah comes calling. Then all bets are off. Source: The Oprah Show, WFAA Television, November 4, 2009 By Patricia Cook - Patricia Cook is a Dallas Cowboys fan living in North Texas.
