The Extreme Sport Of 'Birdmen' Flying From A BASE Jump Point

For the true adrenaline junkies of the world skydiving and BASE jumping are simply not enough. These adventure jockeys seek a deeper thrill to surpass all others and they have discovered this in the sport of Birdmen which utilizes a wingsuit that enables the jumper to fly free. There is no margin for error in this sport. If you are jumping from a BASE site then any mistake will prove deadly.

The secret to this new sport is the wingsuit. It is an airfoil material that is designed to catch the wind and lift the body upwards with a bit of propel. The suit has a special fabric between the legs and connects the arms to the body so when extended a 'wing' materializes. This suit allows the wearer to glide, maneuver, and fly by moving their torso.

The majority of 'Birdmen' will jump from a BASE jumping point but others utilize an air craft similar to a skydiver. Depending on which point they site on jumping from they wear gear that is utilized either for skydiving or BASE jumping plus the wingsuit.

These extremely adventurous 'birdmen' will dive and fly at speeds that often exceed 150mph. They will plunge from their BASE point and literally free fall as the air inflates their 'wings' and enables them to fly. The dive is one of the most important aspects for the flight because it enables the participant to create the air needed to give lift to the wings.

The birdmen cannot fly upwards because of gravity. For every two feet that they fly forward the law of gravity drops them one foot downward as the ground becomes ever closer. Soon they will be faced with deploying their chute or facing death.

The unique design of the suit allows the jumper to stay aloft three times longer then a typical skydiver. This is one of the appeals to the entire sport because the diver truly feels that they are flying forth like a bird. It is probably the closest that men will ever truly come to flying free of machinery.

Normally these daringly adventurous birdmen start their sport by skydiving, then they move on to BASE jumping, from there they try their skill at flying from aircrafts using the wingsuits, and finally for the best of the best they move on to BASE jumping utilizing the wingsuits which is the most extreme version of the birdman sport. By having a visual during their descent such as a sheer rock cliff they can swoop and fly more like a bird which is the true appeal of this adventure sport. The visual will also give them a better perception of the sheer speed that they are flying which is an adrenaline rush. These men 'fly' so close to the sheer rock cliffs that they are able to feel like they could reach outward to touch the rock face as it passes by at 150mph but they are also faced with the reality that if they should inadvertently collide with the rock wall they will die. This is a rush that cannot truly be put into words.

The expertise needed to participate in this dangerous sport is extreme. The participant needs to know exactly when to deploy their chute after the free fall and flying. If they deploy to soon it will be deadly, to slowly will be deadly, and too close to the rock face will prove deadly. The danger of the sport truly cannot be understated in any way. It is a sport that is not for the faint of heart and takes a certain personality to truly enjoy.
