Byron Bay really does offer something for everyone
The warm summer climate of Byron Bay makes it the ideal holiday destination. Situated in New South Wales, Australia it is the eastern most point on the mainland. The atmosphere of the bay is renowned for being relaxed and friendly and a fantastic place to surf, whether you are a beginner or a professional. As well as this the bay has so much more to offer.
The island has a rich heritage which contributes to the laid back atmosphere. Aborigines have been coming to the bay for many thousands of years to tell stories, trade goods and meet prospective partners. The oldest indication of this is a thousand year old meeting site at palm valley. Sadly many indications of the Aboriginal culture have been lost, but enough remains to make it fascinating to see.
The island encourages such modes of transport as walking and cycling. Not only does this cut down on dirt and pollution in the area but also makes the area more peaceful due to the lack of cars.
If you have never been whale watching then the beaches of Byron are the places to see this exhilarating spectacle. This is not the only thing that the beaches of the area offer. For dog lovers there is a specific beach were you can walk your pet in peace. The area is renowned as a surfers paradise and just looking at the beaches you can see why. Clean sand, blue seas and enviable surf breaks make these beaches irresistible to surfers. Lessons are available to those who are tempted.
The outstanding natural beauty of the area is shown to good effect at the cape Byron headland reserve. This is an ecosystem of cliffs, rain forest's teeming with wildlife and dramatic ocean views. For something a bit different you can take a night tour of the reserve. The night vision goggles you are supplied with ensure you get a good view of the animals at night, a experience most people will never have.
One of the highlights that you can not miss if you visit the area is the Julian rocks marine reserve. This underwater paradise consists of rock left by a volcano that erupted 20 million years ago and is the habitat of a dazzling array of marine life. Over 500 types of tropical fish swim around the reserve and you can see them by going on one of the dive expeditions that are available. You might also catch a glimpse of some leopard or gray nurse sharks.
You will be spoilt for choice regarding food, whatever your tastes. The regional markets provide a wealth of fresh local produce and the relaxed atmosphere makes them a pleasure to visit. If self catering isn't for you then there are over 100 restaurants you can sample. If you want to go on to a show or nightclub after your meal then there are plenty to choose from that will ensure you are never short of things to do.
A trip to Byron Bay is full of adventure and surprises for those who want them as sky diving and paragliding lessons are available. For people who want a more relaxing and undemanding holiday the beautiful beaches and nature reserves provide the perfect break that will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.
